Socialdemocratic party of Montenegro inherits all of the historical currencies and the experience of political organizing and antifascist resistance of the people and nations in Montenegro against the social and the national oppression in the 20th Century.
The beginning of the organizational establishment of the socialdemocratic idea as well as the Socialdemocratic party of Montenegro matches with the manifestation of first forms of organized resistance against nationalistic euphoria which at the end of the 80's of the last century first griped and afterwards destroyed the Socialistic Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, at that time a respectable state, in Europe as well as in the entire world.
The formal legal establishment of the Socialdemocratic party of Montenegro begun during the 1990 try the foundation of the parties that will later unite and constitute the SDP of Montenegro in the form in which it exists today: Socialists Party of Montenegro, founded 5 of July 1990 ( which is soon to be joined by the Yugoslavian Peoples party which had a similar political and program approach, founded 2 of Jun 1990 ) and the Socialdemocratic party of reformists ( which was in the meanwhile constituted from the Party of Socialists of Montenegro, founded 27 of July 1990, the Independent organization of communists Bar, founded 28 of May 1990, Party of national equality Plav, founded 26 of July 1990 and the Union of reformists of the Montenegrin coast, founded 14 of July 1990 )
The organizational constitution of the SDP Montenegro in the form in which exists today was finished during the Uniting Congress of Socialdemocratic Party of reformists and the Socialists Party in Podgorica on 12 of Jun 1993. According to this fact we are the only political party in Montenegro which was established by the union and not by division of political entities.
Parties from which SDP was consisted have participated in the first elections in SFRY and republic of Montenegro that introduced the system of multiparty elections, in December 1990, as a solid base of anti-war policy and reformation movement beneath the name "Yugoslavian Reformation Union for Montenegro "and was in its core, without a doubt, the only organized tentative of democratic transition of SFRY into a modern European and democratic state of all of its citizens and all of the republics from which it was consisted of.
In spite of indescribable manipulations, the Yugoslavian Reformation Union for Montenegro won 17 out of 125 mandates in the Montenegrin Parliament, which was just establishing the system of decision-making policy which would involve more then one party.
On parliamentary elections in December of 1993 the founders of SDP have won: 4 mandates in the Montenegrin Parliament (Socialdemocratic party of reformists), as well as 5 mandates in the Federal Parliament (Socialist party of Montenegro).
During the election in November 1996, in spite the fact that SDP won near 17.000 votes and 6% of the electoral body in Montenegro, thanks to one-sided willingness in changing the electoral regulation slightly before the elections she was enabled to participate in the work of the Montenegrin Parliament and managed to win only 1 mandate in the Federal Parliament.
In coalition with the reformed Democratic party of socialists and Peoples party in the elections of May 1998 SDP have managed to win and participate in the parliamentary majority with 5 parliamentary representatives as well as in the government and the state administration with 12,8% of mandates.
During the election of April 2001 in coalition with the Democratic party of socialists, under the slogan "The victory is Montenegrin" SDP have won as well and with its 6 mandates in the Parliament with the support of the Liberal Alliance of Montenegro have constituted the government whose main goal was consisted in preparing the legal and the political environment for the definitive restoration of the full independency, sovereignty and international subjectivity of Montenegro.
Under the pressure of the international community and the unseen lobbing of the Belgrade officials in February 2002 "Belgrade agreement" was signed and the loose State Union of Serbia and Montenegro was established. This contract has putted an three-years lasting moratorium on the organization of the Montenegrin referendum. Joining the protests that have begun SDP have abandoned the government and easily opened a possibility for the new Parliamentary elections to be held. For these election SDP has joined DPS again in order to peruse the support of the citizens for implementing the policy that would lead towards wining the state independency, as well as international acknowledge of Montenegro.
On the Parliamentary election in November 2002 the coalition "For European Montenegro" gains absolute Parliamentary majority and our party, for the first time gets the mandate of the President of the Parliament on which it was placed the SDP President Ranko Krivokapić as well as 7 out of 75 parliamentary mandates, 4 ministry positions in the Montenegrin government. These elections created a specificly hard position for the entire project of restoration of the independency due to the fact that the up until then towards independency oriented Liberal Aliance of Montenegro enters the open coalition with the parties that wanted the survival of the State Union with Serbia. The great support from the citizens won on the elections SDP uses to, beside working on the independency restoration, implement the process of the economical tranzition and improve the entire living standard of the citizens as painless as possible.
The triumf of SDP policy happend 21 of May 2006 when the citizens of Montenegro have voted and with 55,6 % of the votes gain full independency for their state. That day, patriots have came home, just as they did in 1916 and this time insted of the rifle they used a simple pen in order to fight for Montenegrin freedom and they have circled "YES - for Montenegro that we love!"
After this huge success in which all of those who had Montenegro and SDP policy in their hearts withnessed the Proclamation of Independency in the Montenegrin Parliament 3 of Jun 2006 and soon afterwards the Montenegrin flad beein lift up under the headguarters of the United Nations on Ist River as well as the ecceptance into many international institutions and assosiations.
September 2006 rounded up the independency process with the elections for the constitutional Parliament of Montenegro on which the SDP-DPS gains the absolut majority again and Ranko Krivokapić gets to be reelected on the possition for the first President of the Parliament in the independent Montenegro. In the incoming 4 years SDP will be represented in the Parliament by 7 representatives ( this time we were only 100 votes short to get the 8 one! ). In the government that is consisted of 13 ministeries we will be represented by its vicepresident Vujica Lazović and ministers dr. Andrija Lompar and Jusuf Kalamperović.
In March 2009 on the special election coalition "European Montenegro" DPS-SDP got a new confidence of citizens and won 48 seats in the new session of Parliament of Montenegro. SDP in the 24th Montenegrin Parliament session will have two members more and a total of nine will be the third power of the parliamentary parties.
We are convinced that freedom, justice and solidarity are core human values and the pledge of prosperity. We consider them our greatest ideals, the primar purpose of acting and the most important mesure of the worth and succes of the Socialdemocratic party of Montenegro policies. We are convinced that thanks to thise values we will have the full support of the citizens of Montenegro to whom based on our past we guarantee better future!
